THE INSTAGRAM VS. SNAPCHAT WAR: A CLASH OF TITANS

This war of the social media titans began when Instagram introduced its "Stories" feature, which directly competed with Snapchat's unique selling point. So, let's delve into the lessons we can learn from this war and how it highlights the importance of staying vigilant in the competitive business world.

LESSON #1: UNCHECKED IMITATION CAN BE DEADLY

Back in 2010-2011, Instagram launched its revolutionary photo service and quickly gained popularity. By 2012, they were bought by Facebook for a billion dollars, despite having fewer than 100 million users. Meanwhile, Snapchat was emerging as a new player in the market, gaining traction among younger demographics. They flaunted impressive statistics, claiming they were sending 25 snaps per second and hitting a billion snaps year-to-date by late 2012.

Snapchat had a unique selling point - disappearing pictures - that set it apart from other messaging apps. However, they might have underestimated the potential threat of Instagram. The lesson here is that in the competitive business landscape, innovation is crucial. If a competitor imitates your successful features and improves upon them, it can seriously hurt your market position.

LESSON #2: ALWAYS BE PARANOID

A healthy dose of paranoia can be beneficial for businesses, especially in the digital arena. During my time at Jam Dot, a mobile game company, we were paranoid about potential competitors, such as Yahoo, eyeing the mobile gaming space. We took proactive steps, even collaborating with them to protect our position.

Snapchat, too, needed to be more vigilant. When Instagram introduced Stories in 2016, it did so with finesse. Instagram focused on helping users enjoy and consume content seamlessly, while Snapchat seemed more focused on creating new content. Moreover, Instagram made it easier to see who viewed your posts, and the end of Stories was more apparent, making it a smoother user experience overall.

THE EVIL EMPIRE OF FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM

Instagram's parent company, Facebook, is a formidable force. Instagram's rapid growth and introduction of Stories proved that they were not going to rest on their laurels after the acquisition. They actively improved and expanded their platform, with Stories becoming a hit.

Snapchat, though strong and preparing for a massive IPO, cannot afford to ignore the competition. The clash between Instagram and Snapchat is not going away, and both companies will continue to enhance their products to win over users, celebrities, and brands.

The Instagram vs. Snapchat war is far from over, and it's a clash of social media titans. While Snapchat still has a chance to rise to the challenge, they must respond with innovation and adapt to changing trends. This rivalry ultimately benefits users and brands, as the competition drives the development of better products for communication and engagement.

WHY THE SANCTIONS ON NORTH KOREA ARE USELESS

Vladivostok, the largest Russian city on the Pacific Ocean, is known for its unique attractions, including the Soviet-era funicular and impressive bridges built for the 2012 APEC summit. But amidst these tourist destinations lies a peculiar and undocumented phenomenon: "Repair Korea." It is an exclusively-North Korean contractor specializing in home repair and renovation. While Vladivostok offers various charms, it also serves as an example of the complexities surrounding North Korea's economy, sanctions, and the nuclear standoff. In this blog, we'll explore how sanctions have shaped North Korea's actions and why diplomatic progress remains elusive. The Nuclear Pursuit and Broken Promises North Korea's quest for nuclear weapons has been a recurring theme since its existence. In the late 1950s, the Soviet Union agreed to build a reactor for North Korea, but it came with conditions, including signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, North Korea's inc...
